TLC’s outrageous show “Toddlers & Tiaras” is no stranger to controversy, but the series is once again in the spotlight after a father is fighting for the custody of his daughter after she was featured on the show. The series, now in it’s 5th season, focuses on the elusive world of child beauty pageants where children as young as 2 are dressed up with gowns, custom made fake teeth, fake eyelashes, hair extensions, spray tans and full faces of makeup.
Maddy Verst was only four years old when she was featured on the show over a year ago. For the talent portion of the contest her mother dressed her as Dolly Parton, complete with custom made fake breasts and a padded butt- which she referred to as an “added bonus” . Her father Bill Verst has now asked a Kentucky judge to designate him as the primary residential custodial parent. Mr. Verst felt that his estranged wife exploited their little daughter by putting her in the provocative costume and exposing her to the pageant world. The ruling judge appeared to agree and put a temporary ban on all pageants for the remainder of the trial, removed all reporters from the room and placed a gag order on the mother. A court- appointed psychologist stated that the pageants leave Maddy in danger of long term psychological harm and has suggested that custody be turned over to her father. The next court date is scheduled for August 31st.
